Introduction to Fungicide

Fungicides are pesticides that kill or prevent the growth of fungi and their spores. They can be used to control fungi that damage plants, including rusts, mildews and blights. They might also be used to control mold and mildew in other settings.

Functions of Fungicide

Preventative Cultural Practices

Use best management practices including using high quality, pathogen-free seed, crop rotation, using an adapted crop variety, optimal seeding rate, planting date, irrigation practices, fertilization, sanitation including breaking the 'green bridge,' etc.

Responsible Use

When a pesticide is needed, follow all label restrictions and use the best application methods possible to target the disease of interest. If lack of efficacy is suspected, leave an untreated strip to compare with treated areas.

Monitoring

Scout your crop for pests regularly and get pests accurately identified. Use degree-day models where available to determine when the pest is likely to reach medium-high to high risk.

Mechanical Controls

Remove infected plants from the system to prevent reproduction and spread of the pathogen (rogueing).

Physico-Chemical Properties

Fungicides are moderately lipophilic a feature well-reflected by all major fungicide groups except for dithiocarbamates. Moreover, fungicides in general have moderate to high adsorption potential to organic carbon.

Similar to highly lipophilic pesticides. In spite of their lipophilic properties, fungicides still exhibit moderate to high mobility in the soil/pore water matrix, as emphasized by their frequent detection in water, while their water solubility is highly group-specific.

Tips for using Fungicide

  • A fungal disease in plants can be misdiagnosed easily. Check with your local county extension office for help identifying plant disease. They may also be able to recommend a treatment strategy for your lawn or garden.
  • Often, plant diseases are transmitted when leaves are wet. Ground level watering and good air circulation can be used to keep leaves dry.
  • Many fungicides remain on the surface of plant tissues and do not spread throughout the plant. Others penetrate the cuticle and circulate through plant tissues.
  • Pruning shears and other tools can carry plant diseases from one plant to another. Learn about garden sanitation to prevent spreading fungal pathogens yourself.
  • lthough they can slow or stop the development of new symptoms, many fungicides are designed only to prevent disease. These are not highly effective after symptoms have developed.

FAQ

Q: Where are fungicides used?

A: Fungicides are applied either to seeds or directly on crops. Many of the seed-treated fungicides possess systemic action, that is, they can be taken up into plant tissues where they provide protection against pests and pathogens similar to their insecticidal counterparts.

Q: When to apply fungicide?

A: Start applications prior to or when symptoms first develop, and are at a low severity. Fungicides have little to no curative activity, and curative use can promote development of fungicide resistance. Select fungicides that are labeled for the targeted disease and demonstrated to be effective.

Q: How long do fungicides last in a plant?

A: The fungicide may move through the leaf tissue to the margins of the leaf, but it will not translocate through the whole plant or to new leaves that emerge from the canopy. Also, a fungicide is usually only effective for 14-21 days, although some of the newer products may last longer.

Q: What does spraying fungicide do?

A: Penetrant fungicides move into the plant and kill or immobilize the fungus during or after infection. Penetrants may move very little or a fair amount once inside the plant. The amount of movement depends upon the particular fungicide, method of application, and the use of adjuvants, such as a spreader sticker.

Q: Can I apply fungicide everyday?

A: Each plant disease has its own "personality" and thus prefers different weather. However, most plant diseases require leaf wetness. Therefore, during periods of rain and heavy dews, more frequent fungicide applications are a good idea. The normal range of spray applications is every 7 to 14 days.

Q: How fast does fungicide work?

A: Contact fungicides do not penetrate the blades. Therefore, they must remain on the surface of the leaf blade for about 3-8 days to be effective.

Q: What is the application rate for fungicides?

A: In general, higher carrier volumes are recommended to improve fungicide coverage as plants grow and plant density increases. Carrier volumes of 15 to 20 gallons per acre (57 to 76 liters) are recommended for ground applications, with reduced coverage observed at volumes under 15 gallons per acre (57 liters).

Q: Does fungicide need to be watered in?

A: Be sure to check the forecast, as rain can also wash away the product. Systemic fungicides, however, are absorbed by the roots. To be effective, this type must be watered in after application.

Q: Can I put fungicide down with fertilizer?

A: Yes. Lawn Fungus Control can be applied at the same time that you apply any turf products, including grass seed mixtures.

Q: Can you spray fungicide on plant roots?

A: A note that not every fungicide is effective against root rot (or against all fungi that cause root rot), or works in the same way, so if you can't get Buxus Blight, check the label before you buy and apply. Make up your fungicide as per the label and dunk the roots in the solution before you repot.
