Red spider mites (also known as leaf mites) reproduce rapidly, exhibit strong resistance, and are highly concealed. They can cause yellowing leaves, scorched leaves, rolled leaves, leaf drop, and even plant death in crops, often leading to reduced or complete crop loss. They are a highly destructive pest mite. The peak occurrence period for red spider mites is from March to May and September to October each year, particularly after entering April, when prevention and control of red spider mites become critical.

Propargite, an organic sulfur-based mite killer, serves as a formidable weapon against red spider mites, combining contact killing and stomach toxicity for effective control.

Introduced by Uniroyal in 1968 in the U.S., Propargite stands as a high-efficiency, low-toxicity organic sulfur mite control agent.

As a mitochondrial (adenosine triphosphatase) inhibitor, Propargite combats pests through a dual mechanism: contact killing and gastric toxicity. By acting on the mite epidermis or feeding organs, it disrupts metabolic processes, achieving lethal results. After treatment with Propargite, mites stop feeding promptly and lay fewer eggs, usually dying within 48–96 hours. It effectively controls eggs, young mites, nymphs, and adults, with standout performance against nymphs and adult mites.

Distingushed Features of Propargite

 Broad spectrum and efficient

Propargite is highly effective against all life stages of key leaf mite pests: adult, nymph, and juvenile forms of cotton red spider (cinnabar mite), citrus red spider (citrus full claw mite), apple red spider (apple full claw mite), and two-spotted leaf mite (common leaf mite). These pests fall under the order Acariformes (Acaroidea) in the phylum Arthropoda. The agent excels in targeting adult and nymph mites, including those that have developed resistance to other treatments. When paired with egg-killing agents, it offers a complete solution for managing mite infestations across their entire reproductive period.

 Quick acting and long-lasting

Propargite acts via contact killing and gastric toxicity, without internal absorption, systemic spread, or permeation. Mites stop feeding after exposure, with a rapid knockdown rate of over 90% within 24 hours. The agent's effects persist for 15–20 days, maintaining a stable field control efficacy of 98%.

 Resistance management

For nearly 60 years, Propargite has been deployed worldwide, targeting atypical sites on mites with unparalleled efficacy. Its distinctive mechanism of action prevents resistance development and avoids interactive resistance with other acaricides. Even mites resistant to conventional treatments are effectively controlled by Propargite.

 Temperature-sensitive

For maximum medicinal effect, temperatures above 20°C are ideal, as efficacy declines in colder environments. This agent excels in orchard clearing after fruit harvest, during spring shoot sprouting, and in autumn applications.

As temperatures fall below 20°C, Propargite's effectiveness declines progressively, with avoidance advised below 14°C. Conversely, at temperatures exceeding 27°C, it delivers a powerful trifecta-contact killing, stomach poisoning, and fumigation effects.

High temperatures demand careful dosage management. In hot and humid environments, applying high concentrations of Propargite to citrus shoots and young fruits can lead to pesticide damage, causing leaf wrinkling, spotting, and flower bark on young fruits. Despite these effects, crop growth remains unaffected.
