It is easily deliquescent and decomposes upon absorbing moisture from the air, releasing highly toxic phosphine gas (which has a garlic-like odor). Inhalation of phosphine can cause symptoms such as dizziness, headache, nausea, fatigue, loss of appetite, chest tightness, and upper abdominal pain. Severe cases may involve toxic psychiatric symptoms, cerebral edema, pulmonary edema, damage to the liver, kidneys, and myocardium, as well as arrhythmia.
