As a bipyridyl cation, it is quickly absorbed by plant leaves and reduced to free radicals in green tissues through photosynthesis and respiration. These radicals undergo auto-oxidation, generating hydrogen peroxide and oxygen free radicals that disrupt thylakoid membranes, halting photosynthesis and chlorophyll synthesis, ultimately causing desiccation.
