Bacillus thuringiensis Basic principle
Bt can produce a variety of intracellular or extracellular bioactive components, such as proteins, nucleosides, amino polyols, etc. It mainly has insecticidal activity against Lepidoptera, diptera and Coleoptera insects. In addition, it has insecticidal activity against more than 600 harmful species in the phyla Arthropoda, phyla Brachyphyla, phyla Molata and phyla Protozoa. Some strains have killing activity against cancer cells. It also produces active substances against pathogenic bacteria. However, among all the subspecies of Bt, no activity has been found in more than half of them.
Application field
Bacillus thuringiensis is applicable to a very wide range of crops. It is widely applied to various plants such as cruciferous vegetables, solanaceous vegetables, cucurbitaceous vegetables, tobacco, rice, sorghum, soybeans, peanuts, sweet potatoes, cotton, tea trees, apples, pears, peaches, jujubes, citrus fruits, and spines. It is mainly used to control lepidoptera pests, such as cabbage worms, diamondback moths, beet armyworms, diamondback moths, cabbage armyworms, tobacco worms, corn borer, rice leaf roller, rice stem borer, pine caterpillar, tea caterpillar, tea inchworm, corn armyworm, pod borer, silver armyworm and many other pests. Some subspecies or strains also have control effects on pests such as vegetable root-knot nematodes, mosquito larvae, and onion maggots.
